I recently shared on social media a brief article listing the top digital marketing trends to watch for in 2019. It was a good article, with a lot of actionable information, but what surprised me most was what was missing. The one digital marketing trend that I see truly coming into its own in 2019:
Advergaming.
For those unfamiliar with the term, it is a game designed to promote a product or brand by featuring that product or brand as part of the game itself.
Simple, easy to play games, like match-3 style games (think Candy Crush,) physics based games (i.e., Angry Birds) and puzzle games are fun, addictive, and wildly popular. Advertisers are starting to notice, leveraging the popularity of these games to drive brand affinity and strengthen the relationship between consumer and brand.
Unfortunately, up until very recently, the complexity of game development has made advergaming cost prohibitive for all but a select few major brands with enormous marketing budgets. Thankfully, that is starting to change. New game development platforms are bringing advergames within reach of even the smallest, local brands.
